Next HAPS Meeting Thurs 27th October

7.15pm, at the North London Community House, Moorefield Road, N17

Haringey anti-cuts chronology/summary – so far - Early 2010: around 5,000 people successfully marched to save Whittington Hospital services.
- Summer 2010: Haringey Alliance for Public Services launched.
- 2010/11: HAPS handed out over 120,000 leaflets to alert local people on what is going on, and held many local rallies and marches to bring everyone together. Have achieved a great deal of local press publicity.
- Dec 2010: Over 600 local government workers held a mass meeting to oppose cuts and to back HAPS. 1,000 attended a local TU march, backed by HAPS.
- In the spring/summer of 2011: over 400 attended a series of ‘Save The NHS’ public meetings around Haringey.
- Spring 2011: 200 local people attended a ‘Black Activists Rise Against Cuts’ meeting in Tottenham.
- Early 2011: Over 1,000 local youth were involved in a local campaign to save their youth services and centres. 40 attended a recent Jobs For Youth / Day-Mer / HAPS protest at the Civic Centre.
- Students, backed by trades unions, held local and national demonstrations and occupations to defend education, especially during the winter 2010/11.
- Carers and older people’s groups have campaigned to keep open vital local day centres and facilities.
- Friends of Parks groups have been speaking out and protesting against the threat of 50% cuts to staffing and maintenance. Their 2,500-strong petition to reverse the cuts has now forced the Council to hold a debate at the full Council meeting on 21st November.
- There have been a number of protests inside Haringey banks, objecting to the massive public subsidies, fat cat bonuses and tax evasion.
- February 24th 2011: hundreds of local residents and workers protested outside and then occupied the Civic Centre calling on Councillors to oppose the cuts.
- March 26, 2011: 500,000 attended the TUC anti-cuts demonstration in Central London, including a lively Haringey contingent.
- June 30, 2011: 750,000 public service workers went on strike to defend pensions and oppose cuts. HAPS members supported picket lines and a UCU rally at CONEL.
- August 13th 2011: In response to the riots, the Haringey and Hackney anti-cuts alliances joined with Day-Mer in organising a 3,000-strong ‘Give Our Kids A Future’ demonstration from Dalston to Tottenham.
